How did ancient Greek music sound?

Postby Staropramen » Wed Oct 23, 2013 10:17 pm

The music of ancient Greece, unheard for thousands of years, is being brought back to life by Armand D'Angour, a musician and tutor in classics at Oxford University. He describes what his research is discovering.

It sounds suspicious to me.
"Give a hammer to a white, and he will build civilization;
Give a hammer to an asian, and he will build other hammers;
Give a hammer to an arab, and he will kill his wife;
Give a hammer to a nigger, and he will kill whites;
Give a hammer to a jew, and he will sell it to niggers.

Lang said, “It sounds suspicious to me.” You are correct, nothing new here.

For many years "The Development of Western Music- An Anthology, Second Edition, K Maria Stolba CD1" has offered the Human Cult Song & First Delphic Hymn performances. These ancient greek songs sound like very primitive choral music.

This very interesting set highlights the development of Western Music through Antes. (Find the 8 CD set which is the best CD set by Brown & Benchmark produced in the 1990’s) Look in Used Section

You're welcome. Can't say I know much about this topic so I thought I'd post it and see if anyone had any comments. Thanks for those links as well.

I am familiar with the Hurrian hymns, which seem frankly too fragmented and ancient to translate into musical notation with any degree of accuracy (there are about four different interpretations).

It is however widely accepted that the 2000 year old Greek Seikolos Epitaph is accurate to the the tune and words intended, though whether it's at the correct tempo etc I don't know.
