Mince pies anyone?

Postby Staropramen » Tue Dec 16, 2014 9:31 pm

I love Mince pies. They were always at the holiday table growing up because of my grandfather who was born in England. I've been enjoying the frozen ones from Mrs. Smith recently but I found a medieval recipe [actually a compilation of medieval recipes] and I'm going to make some for Christmas. This will include actual meat, beef suet and Rum along with the fruit.

Anyone else like Mince meat pies?

In Australia mince meat pies are most commonly minced beef in gravy in pastry. There are different flavours, like chunky steak or potato-top; but mince meat is my favourite. One of my favourite foods actually. I think some Aussies have tried marketing them in New York.

At Christmas time we do have the ones you are referring to, but I don't like them, fruit mince pies too.

Nayto you should look up 'Aussie meat pie' too, as well as Staro's recipe.

We have meat pies in South Africa as well :)

A good meat pie is delicious. You get mass produced ones at supermarkets which are disgusting though. Cottage and shepherds pie are also great.

I recently learned that pie is almost never a savoury dish in the USA. Thid was very strange to me.

I didn't know that. Well the supermarket ones are terrible. But when you make one at home or go to a good bakery, they are the best.

Homemade they are just mince and pastry mainly, so not expensive. And with hot-chips... well I shouldn't get too enthusiastic about food. Shepard and cottage are great, the Shepherd is with lamb though. Both usually have potato top.

Yes, I thought it was strange too, their pies are mostly apple or berry pies. Ha, and we have meat in ours.

Sorry to derail your thread momentarily Staropramen. Maybe you can share your recipe?

I'm going to use 1 lemon and 1 orange and Rum instead of Brandy and wine.

My wife always makes "pot pies" with leftover turkey. She also makes Shepard's Pie with curried beef and sweet potato topping.

She may not be Identity but she cooks better than mom. 8-)

This project is under way. I prepared the meat yesterday;

This morning I mixed all the ingredients together [minus the Rum for now], processed the suet into granules, rendered it until crispy and cooked down the ingredients;

Waiting for the mixture to cool so I can add the Rum. My wife will begin making the crust from scratch shortly. It smells amazing!

:)

My wife's first attempt at homemade pie crust is a success! It's now in the oven baking. This one when finished goes in the fridge until Thursday. There's enough extra filling for a second smaller pie so right after this is done we'll use the frozen crusts we bought just in case and eat that one tonight.
