Baldwin IV of Anjou, King of Jerusalem (1161-1185)

Baldwin was crowned king of Jerusalem at the age of 13 through one of its most perilous periods. He was a young tough warrior who refused to ratify the peace treaty with Saladin, leader of the muslim mongrels, and instead pursued a policy of agression against his neighbors. He was above all deeply pious in his religious faith, and believed it was his God's given duty to defend the Holy Sepulcher of Jesus and Jerusalem from muslim hands. However, even at his early age, his life was hard:

"There is no more haunting passage in contemporary writting on the Crusades than William of Tyre's description of the young Baldwin IV, the blue-eyed prince of Jerusalem whose youthful promise turned into despair at the discovery of his leprosy. The pain of the account comes from personal involvement. William, then archdeacon of Tyre, was Baldwin's tutor; it was in his household that the first symptoms appeared".

Even though Baldwin was a young king, suffering from such a ruthless disease, against all the odds he overcame his physical incapabilities and proved what a white man under the guidance of God can do.

"Saladin suddenly crossed the frontier of Egypt in November 1177 with 25,000 men ravaging the coastal plain and marching north and east toward Jerusalem, destroying everything in his path, decapitating all prisoners. With less than 600 knights, outnumbered more than forty to one, the little leper King left the great fortress of Ascalon to which he had rushed when he heard the news of the invasion, and marched in pursuit. Saladin could not believe his stricken, outmaneuvered and wholly inexperienced adversary would attempt so bold a stroke against the odds. He kept poor watch, and did not even know that Baldwin and his men had left Ascalon. On November 25 Baldwin caught up with Saladin's army in a gully near the castle of Montgisgard and charged. His men swore they saw St. George himself, mounted on a white horse, leading the assault. The surprise was total, the rout complete. Most of Saladin's bodyguard of a thousand mamelukes fell around him; he barely made his escape thanks to their sacrifice. His army was lost; once again, Jerusalem was saved".

His disease and inexperience didn't stop him from being a brave king, even though faced with a delicate situation in the kingdom.

The "hero of these years", who "even in illness ensured that every attack was met by a Christian army, the duty of which was not to seek battle but to challange any attempt by the enemy to take castles and towns".

Baldwin IV died in Jerusalem in spring 1185. Though often suffering from the effects of leprosy and ruling with regency governments, Baldwin was able to maintain himself as king for much longer than otherwise might have been expected.
"Give a hammer to a white, and he will build civilization;
Give a hammer to an asian, and he will build other hammers;
Give a hammer to an arab, and he will kill his wife;
Give a hammer to a nigger, and he will kill whites;
Give a hammer to a jew, and he will sell it to niggers.

Godfrey of Bouillon, first Ruler of the crusader Kingdom of Jerusalem (1060-1100)

Image

Godfrey of Bouillon was a frankish knight, Duke of the Lower Lorraine, who sold most his properties to join the First Crusade and defend Christendom against muslim mongrel troops attacking the Eastern Christian Empire and the pilgrims in their route to Jerusalem.

"Godfrey was a religious man, mild mannered, virtuous, and God-fearing. He was just, he avoided evil, he was trustworthy and dependable in his undertakings... He was assiduous in prayer and pious works, renowned for his liberality, graciously affable civil, and merciful. His whole life was commendable and pleasing to God... He was a man of incomparable strength, with stout limbs, a manly chest, and a handsome face. His hair and beard were a medium blond. He was considered by everyone to be most outstanding in the use of weapons and militarly operations".

Sometimes he was described being more a monk than a soldier, due to his great religious fervor.

"Godfrey was the first to sell his land and set out on the road to Jerusalem", said the Byzantine princess Anna Comnena.

In 1097 he participated in the siege of Nicaea, when he captured it back to the Eastern Christians. The legend says during the battle there was a peculiar muslim warrior who was defending the walls of Nicaea, valiantly killing a lot of crusaders, and he couldn't be killed by anyone, untill Godfrey himself approached the walls and shot him to the heart with his crossbow, his favorite weapon.

In their way to Antioch, the crusaders were surprised by an attack and the muslim army was killing a lot of people who were in the rear, as their tactics consisted of attacking the rear of the army, and in the process captured a lot of women and children who they intended to sell in the muslim slave market. Godfrey and his men counter-attacked the muslims, overcame them and pursued them untill they could liberate most of the women they had taken as slaves.

During the siege of Antioch, Godfrey gave the following speech to his men:

"We are devout worshippers of the Living God and of our Lord Jesus Christ, in whose name we go to battle. Our enemies trust in their own strength; we, however, in the name of the Living God. Trusting in His mercy, we do not hesitate in giving battle to infidels and unbelivers. For we are the Lord's, whether we live or die".

After the siege of Antioch, Godfrey and his men raided a few minor muslim holdings in the area, and Godfrey was known for returning with several mongrels heads on spikes.

In 1099 he was involved in the siege of Jerusalem, assaulting the city thourgh its northwest walls. At this event his legendary reputation was really established. During the siege, Godfrey was at the top of a siege tower, shooting his crossbow against the muslim defenders, when a projectile seriously damaged his tower and it began to fall apart. Godfrey, a huge, very phisically powerful man, was able to hold the tower together, using only one arm, while at the same time he continued to shoot his crossbow untill the tower could be repaired. Godfrey's men were the first to penetrate the walls and get into Jerusalem.

Once the city was secured, Godfrey was unanimously chosen by the crusaders to be ruler of Jerusalem. They wanted to name him king, but he refused to be crowned king "upon the plea that he would never wear a crown of gold where his Saviour had worn a crown of thorns".

"The people of the Lord's army in the Holy City chose Godfrey prince of the realm because of the nobility of his character, militarly skill, patient conduct, no less than for his elegance of manners, to protect and govern it".

Even though his Kingdom had just been created, he already had to defend it against mongrel invaders from Egypt, which he did efficiently defeating them at the Battle of Ascalon.

"The Kingdom in his days grew more secure and well established... He refreshed the newly planted Kingdom and gave it protection against the molestations of attacker".

Only one year later, in June 1100, he died in Caesarea due to illness, after fulfilling his mission on Earth.
"Give a hammer to a white, and he will build civilization;
Give a hammer to an asian, and he will build other hammers;
Give a hammer to an arab, and he will kill his wife;
Give a hammer to a nigger, and he will kill whites;
Give a hammer to a jew, and he will sell it to niggers.

James I of Barcelona, "the Conqueror", King of Aragon (1208-1276)

Image

James was the King of Aragon, Valencia and Majorca, Count of Barcelona and Lord of Montpellier, who had one of the longest reigns in history, and one of the greatest crusader kings in history as well.

"James was entirely bent on prosecuting the war against the pagans, so that once their infidelity was uprooted from the land, the faith of Christ might be disseminated".

His first target was the mulsim held island of Majorca, which couldn't stand his army and was quickly overcame. One day, during a hunt, James was conversating with the master of the Hospitaller Knights about reconquering Valencia. It wasn't long after this, that James set out with his army on the road to the Kingdom of Valencia, and after his crusading campaign, conquering castles and cities, the beautiful city of Valencia itself fell to his hands. When he saw his banners erected, James said they turned to the east, and tears fell from their eyes, and they kissed the ground, for God had greatly favored them.

After this feat, he earned the reputation of a great crusader and King Louis of France sent him a thorn from the relic of the thorn crown of Christ. Also, he did great things in his realm as a patron of art and literature, such as the construction of the Tower of Lleida, which held together both roman and gothic style.

During the campaign in Valencia, James stopped to help a wounded soldier shot by an arrow:

'And we said: "Let us send for lint from the camp, and draw the arrow out." And we did so. And we ourselves pulled pulled out the arrow and we put lint with water on the wound, and we had the wound bound with a piece of the shirt of a squire. And when the wound was bound, we asked him to go into the camp, and said that we would take charge there, and would excuse him from any service untill he was better".

In another episode:

"Thus, we went to Borriana. And when the moment had arrived when we wished to raise camp, a swallow had made her nest on the pole of our tent; and we ordered our men not to take down the tent untill she and her little ones had gone, since she had trusted us".

James was also very devoted to his queen, Violant of Hungary, he loved her deeply and respected her as his adviser, he insisted on her company during his wars against Valencia. During the negotiations with the muslim ruler of Valencia, he frequently asked for her advise.

In 1276, James fell very ill at Alzira and resigned his crown, intending to retire to the monastery of Poblet, but he died at Valencia on 27 July.
"Give a hammer to a white, and he will build civilization;
Give a hammer to an asian, and he will build other hammers;
Give a hammer to an arab, and he will kill his wife;
Give a hammer to a nigger, and he will kill whites;
Give a hammer to a jew, and he will sell it to niggers.
